The most common question we hear at our showroom is “what will my kitchen cost?” The honest answer is that it depends on size, layout changes, and the materials you choose, but after remodeling hundreds of Bakersfield kitchens we can give you realistic ranges to plan with. Typical kitchen remodel cost ranges in Bakersfield
- Refresh (same layout, $20,000 to $35,000): new cabinet doors or cabinet painting, new countertops, backsplash, sink, faucet and lighting. Existing plumbing and electrical stay where they are.
- Full remodel, same footprint ($40,000 to $70,000): new cabinets, quartz or granite countertops, tile backsplash, new flooring, recessed lighting, new appliances and updated plumbing and electrical, with permits. This is the most common project we build.
- Full remodel with layout changes ($70,000 to $120,000+): everything above plus removing a wall, adding an island or peninsula, relocating the sink or range, structural beams, and custom or semi-custom cabinetry.

What drives the cost
Cabinets (30% to 40% of the budget)
Cabinets are the largest line item. Stock cabinets are the least expensive, semi-custom shaker cabinets are the sweet spot for most Bakersfield homes, and fully custom cabinetry with specialty finishes or inset doors costs the most. Taking cabinets to the ceiling, adding a pantry or a large island adds boxes and cost.
Countertops (10% to 15%)
Quartz is the most requested surface we install and typically runs from about $60 to $120 per square foot installed depending on the brand and pattern. Granite is similar; porcelain slabs and premium quartzite run higher. A full-height slab backsplash, as in our Garza kitchen, adds material and fabrication.
Layout and structural changes
Removing a wall between the kitchen and family room is the single most valuable change in many 1980s and 1990s Bakersfield homes, and often the most expensive. If the wall is load-bearing, the cost includes engineering, a beam and the permit. Moving the sink, range or refrigerator means new plumbing, gas or electrical runs.
Electrical and lighting
Older kitchens rarely have enough circuits for today’s appliances. Budget for new dedicated circuits, GFCI outlets, recessed LED cans, under-cabinet lighting and pendants over the island.
Flooring
Luxury vinyl plank is the most popular choice in the kitchens we build because it handles water and traffic well. Tile and hardwood cost more. Many clients run the new floor through the adjoining dining and living rooms, which increases square footage but gives a much better result.
Appliances
Appliance packages range from about $4,000 for a standard stainless set to $15,000 and up for professional ranges and panel-ready refrigerators. We install whatever you choose and make sure the electrical and gas are ready for it.
Permits
Kitchen permits with the City of Bakersfield or Kern County typically cost a few hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on the scope. Coast Design & Build handles the application and inspections; the fee is listed in your estimate.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
Plan on 4 to 8 weeks of construction for a full remodel once cabinets arrive. Cabinet lead times run 3 to 8 weeks, and permit approval can add a few weeks before that, so a typical project is 2 to 4 months from signed contract to final walkthrough.
Ways to keep your kitchen remodel on budget
- Keep the sink, range and refrigerator where they are if the layout already works.
- Choose semi-custom shaker cabinets over fully custom.
- Pick a quartz from the standard color groups rather than a premium pattern.
- Use a tile backsplash instead of a slab.
- Decide on every selection before demolition starts. Changes mid-project are where budgets slip.
