The shower
The shower is usually the most expensive part of a bathroom. A curbless walk-in shower with a linear drain, large-format tile, a bench, niches and a frameless glass panel costs considerably more than a standard tiled shower with a sliding door, mainly because of the waterproofing, floor work and glass. A prefabricated shower base with tile walls is a solid mid-range option.
Tile
Porcelain tile is the workhorse: durable, water-resistant and available in marble, stone and wood looks. Cost rises with large formats, natural stone, mosaics and patterns like herringbone that take more labor to set.
Vanity and countertop
A stock vanity with a quartz top is the least expensive route. Floating vanities, double vanities and custom cabinetry cost more, as do integrated-sink tops and wall-mounted faucets.
Plumbing and electrical
Keeping the toilet, sink and shower drain where they are saves real money. Moving fixtures means opening the slab or floor. New circuits, an exhaust fan, LED mirrors and recessed lighting are common upgrades and require a permit.
